The medium to long-term evolution of hypersonic vehicles, as well as re-entry and more general space transportation systems, will be characterized by a continuously increasing utilization of advanced hot structures. The increase of the performances of such components and systems will likely evolve towards sharp aerodynamic profiles, that offer several advantages with respect to current blunt shapes: manoeuvrability improvement, decrease of electromagnetic interferences and communication black-out during the re-entry phase, and drag reduction. The main drawback and limitation of this innovative trend in design is represented by the dramatic increase of the aerodynamic heat fluxes at the stagnation points, that the state of art hot structures materials are not able to withstand.

In the past years, the Italian scientific community has extensively studied and investigated, even through significant on-ground qualification test campaigns, new architectural designs of sharp sub-components based on Ultra High Temperature Ceramics (UHTC’s), and their effective applicability to hot structure concepts of future slender-shaped vehicles. Flight test are being designed and prepared, as well.

The Workshop aims to offer to the parties with a common interest in UHTC-based hot structures the opportunity to gather for discussions and planning of future achievements and potential cooperative activities. The event will draw together the Workshop scientific and technological outcomes in order to properly foster the subject.

The Workshop will offer participants the possibility to present their own R&D activities in the UHTC field.
Interested authors are requested to submit to the Organizing Committee title and a short abstract by e-mail to the attention of Mrs Aura Paraschivescu at SegPMAS@cira.it, ph. +39/0823 623042.
Abstracts will be due no later than October 3rd 2008.
Abstract submission entitles CIRA to post the presentation on the Workshop site after the Workshop.
Authors will be notified of paper acceptance within one week.
It is responsibility of those authors whose presentations are accepted to ensure the Power Point file availability, by sending it to the above mentioned e-mail address or by bringing it directly the day of the presentation.
